Nestled in the lower Coghinas Valley, it follows the island’s third-longest river to its mouth and overlooks the center of the Gulf of Asinara, surrounded by green landscapes. Valledoria is an agricultural and tourist town with over 4,000 residents. Its main crop is artichokes, which take center stage in April during cultural events and form the basis of the local culinary tradition; it also boasts a strong artisan tradition in gold and coral craftsmanship. It has been an autonomous municipality since 1961, formed by the merger of the localities of Baia Verde, Codaruina, La Ciaccia, La Muddizza, Maragnani, San Pietro (and Santa Maria Coghinas, which later became independent in 1983), formerly hamlets of Castelsardo and Sedini. The town center is Codaruina, whose name refers to the “outskirts of the ruins” of the ancient and glorious city of Ampurias. The original settlement formed as a result of the influx of farmers from Gallura who settled the vast, fertile, and unpopulated plains, while the place name “Valle dei Doria” derives from the noble Ligurian family that ruled the Anglona region in the 13th century.

Between the late 20th and early 11th centuries, numerous lodging facilities and tourist services were established to showcase the seven kilometers of soft, golden sandy coastline, interrupted only by the mouth of the Coghinas River and a few rocks at Maragnani. The beach at San Pietro a Mare offers a striking contrast between the light-colored sand and the azure sea, while the beach at Baia delle Mimose is a stretch of pure white sand framed by green-covered dunes. San Pietro and La Ciaccia are popular destinations for windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts from all over Europe. The entire area is a breath of fresh air: the plain is dotted with abundant vegetable gardens, lush pine and eucalyptus forests, gentle hills, and plenty of water—the Coghinas River forms a lake covering over 50 hectares before flowing into the sea, the lake area of Valledoria Beach, home to herons, ducks, wigeons, and mallards; and along the banks, in the reeds, tamarisk, and willow thickets, coots, moorhens, and water rails. Sea bass and mullet swim in the brackish waters. The area is ideal for horseback riding, hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, sport fishing, and sailing.

The area was first settled on the Muddizza hills and later on the plain, as the marsh gradually gave way to arable land. The soil’s fertility, easy access from the sea, and the navigability of part of the river contributed to the region’s prosperity of Ampurias, to which the Sardinian Church attached great importance: it was among the first episcopal sees in the north, retained its authority until 1503, and expanded by incorporating the Diocese of Civita (Olbia). The mouth of the Coghinas River formed an integrated port system, which excavations at Zilvara and Santa Maria Maddalena have helped to bring to light. The town’s archaeological museum documents its evolution and also displays stelae from a Roman necropolis.
